The Climb to Conquer Cancer of Phoenix is the American Cancer Society’s largest single-day climb event in the world. Every February in Arizona, thousands of cancer survivors, family members, caregivers and supporters participate in the Climb to Conquer Cancer. At Humble Design, we know that a house is not a home without a warm bed and a place to gather with family. Our home makeovers change an entire mindset, generating an immediate focus on self-empowerment and long-term stability. With your support, Humble Design can help set families on a course towards a bright and hopeful future. Families take a personal stake in their newly furnished homes, leading to a remarkable success rate – 99 percent to receive Humble Design’s services have escaped the cycle of homelessness. Clients are referred by designated services that work with local shelters.

When I started this I knew nothing about the area or nonprofits. Every meeting I took with community leaders or knowledgeable individuals ended with me making one more friend. Humble Design to Serve 2,000th Client in Fight against Homelessness
U-Haul, a national partner of Humble Design since 2016, will serve as the 2K Family Sponsor. We called all these places, and they all responded, “Hey that’s really a great idea, there’s nobody out there who does that! ” By the ninth phone call, Ana and I looked at each other and knew we had found a hole in the system.
Our challenge was simply managing and moving all that furniture! We are lucky to have partnered with U-Haul who has provided their trucks and donated warehouse space. We also hire security guards during the “Deco Day” to ensure our volunteers and staff are safe. Proceeds support Humble Design’s mission to serve families, individuals, and veterans emerging out of homelessness with donated furniture and household goods. After the success of opening in Chicago last year, we have decided to expand to Dearborn, Seattle and San Diego in 2018. "We realize that during this unusual time, the needs of the communities we serve don't stop," said Julie Dickinson, director of Humble Design Chicago. "If we can help while keeping our staff and those we serve safe, we are going to do it." “A lot of the clients we work with will have gotten housing, but they don’t even stay there because they don’t have furniture,” Dickinson said. There are tables in both the kitchen and dining room, plus a couch and a coffee table in the living room.
I am in the unusual position of loving what I do, but not needing to do it. We don’t have a bottom line, or stockholders. We need to love what we do with all of our hearts and take breaks when we don’t. Is there a special story or family that stands out in your mind? All of the families we help have amazing stories one way or another, but I remember a few that stood out to me because of the families’ untold sacrifices. One woman had three children and her husband died of cancer.
When her sister died a year later she took in her three kids and cared for them as if they were her own. She worked two jobs to keep the family afloat, and when we furnished her house, she gave the larger room to the kids and slept in the basement. She cried for the first time in years when she saw those kids jump up and down with happiness.
